Twitter is taking aim at terrorism and spreaders of hateful messaging. The platform says it has removed one million accounts since 2015. It’s one of the trending stories in social media this week.
Twitter Tackles Terrorism
Twitter is trying to disassociate itself from people who believe the platform is hot bed of hate and propaganda. The platform reported that it removed 275,000 accounts in the last six months of 2017, bringing its total of terrorism-related banned accounts to 1.2 million.
In a blog post, Twitter said that it has been working towards eliminating terrorism on the site for years, and that online terrorist-related activity is, “increasingly shifting away from Twitter.”
Twitter says that its own technology is doing the work, discovery 93% of the banned accounts. 75% of the accounts never posted a tweet before being banned.
Facebook and Instagram Change Security Policy with User Data
Third-party applications like HootSuite are making announcements to their customers that some of their programs functionality is being affected by recent changes that Facebook and Instagram have made regarding the security of their user data.
These third-party apps help users plan and schedule posts. In some cases, Facebook will penalize posts that have used these types of programs, through reduced visibility, since the company prefers posts in real-time. User information is shared between Facebook and third-party programs like this so the program can work seamlessly with the user’s account. Because of a recent security breach, where it was found that Facebook has been not securing user data correctly, the platform has upped its policy to rectify the situation.
